Advocacy

Policy Priorities

The CPC is a proactive advocate for strong copyright policies, ethical innovation in the education ecosystem and other government and policy directives that impact the publishing industry, its customers, or content creators.

Stakeholders

We engage with Federal and Provincial government officials, including both elected MPs and MPPs, their key staff members and employees responsible for policy within key Departments and Ministries. Federally, this includes the Departments of Canadian Heritage; Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED); and Provincially, Ministries of Education and Colleges and Universities, among many others.

Collaboration

Our advocacy work includes collaboration with industry groups that share CPC’s areas of concern; ACP, TWUC, Access Copyright, Copibec, ANEL and others are examples where close collaboration has helped amplify our message and strengthen our influence with key stakeholders and decision-makers.

Current Issues of Importance

CPC has added its voice to advocate for Copyright reform, especially regarding Fair Dealing for Education, a vaguely defined element of the Copyright Modernization Act that has been highly controversial since its inclusion in 2012 reforms.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is of paramount importance to the writing and publishing sector today, and CPC has submitted its views to the Federal government consultation and continues to engage policy makers on this critical topic. AI is of importance in the K-12 sector as well, where CPC is reaching out to Ministry of Education policy makers for discussion. The CPC is committed to supporting the rights of all creators, authors and publishers.

Book-banning is another area of growing concern where CPC is defending authors’ rights.

Accountability and Affordability in Higher Education

The CPC Higher Education members are committed to providing students and instructors with exceptional learning experiences at affordable prices. The CPC advocates with members of the larger public—including government stakeholders, postsecondary students and the general population—on the value of publisher-provided courseware, innovative affordability initiatives such as Inclusive Access and other on-campus digital delivery programs.
